BETHANY, CT — A devastating tragedy has shaken the communities of Shelton and Thomaston, as 37-year-old Philip Labonte was killed in a horrific motorcycle crash on Monday night, June 23, 2025. The accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Route 69 in Bethany, according to Connecticut State Police.
Labonte, a resident of Thomaston and beloved by many in Shelton where he had strong community ties, was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle when he struck a deer that entered the roadway. The violent impact threw him from his motorcycle and onto the highway.
Tragically, just moments later, a Subaru Impreza driven by a 37-year-old man from Prospect approached the scene and was unable to avoid hitting Labonte, who was lying in the road. First responders arrived quickly, but Labonte was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not released the identity of the Subaru driver but confirmed that no criminal charges have been filed at this time. The incident is being investigated as a heartbreaking accident, with no indication of wrongdoing or impairment by any party involved.
Philip Labonte’s sudden death has sent shockwaves through his family, friends, and colleagues. Known for his love of motorcycles and the open road, he was described by those close to him as a kind, adventurous spirit, someone who could light up a room with his presence and laughter. He was a dedicated son, loyal friend, and passionate rider, always willing to lend a helping hand or share a story over coffee.
“This is a devastating loss,” a close friend wrote on social media. “Phil was the kind of person who made life better just by being around. His absence leaves a hole in our hearts that will never fully heal.”
Connecticut State Police are continuing to investigate the crash and urge motorists to remain vigilant, especially during dusk and nighttime hours when wildlife is more likely to be active on roadways.
A memorial service is expected to be announced in the coming days. In the meantime, the Labonte family is asking for privacy as they grieve this unimaginable loss.
Rest in peace, Philip Labonte. You were taken far too soon, but your spirit will ride on forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved you.
