It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of The Honorable Rocky L. De Witt of Sioux City, Iowa, who died after a courageous and hard-fought battle with cancer.
A proud public servant, devoted family man, and steadfast advocate for conservative principles, Rocky’s life was marked by integrity, resilience, and unwavering dedication to the people of Woodbury County and the state of Iowa.
Rocky De Witt first stepped into public service in 2016 when he won a competitive Republican nomination for the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors. From the beginning, he brought a strong voice to the board, eventually serving as Chairman.
His leadership on the board was marked by a focus on transparency, fiscal responsibility, and an unshakable belief in limited government. He understood the role not as one of power, but of stewardship—recognizing that public office is held in trust for the people it serves.
Following Iowa’s latest redistricting, Rocky answered a greater call and ran for the Iowa State Senate in District 1. In a significant political victory, he unseated a long-standing incumbent, proving that the people of Sioux City, Lawton, and surrounding areas believed in his vision and trusted his leadership.
As a state senator, Rocky remained a tireless champion for conservative values, individual liberty, and constitutional integrity. One of his most significant legislative achievements was shepherding a proposed constitutional amendment that reflects his unwavering belief in responsible governance.
The Two-Thirds Legislative Vote Requirement for Income Tax Increase Bills Amendment, which would require a supermajority vote in both legislative chambers for any increase in individual or corporate income taxes, stands as a testament to his commitment to protecting Iowa taxpayers.
The people of Iowa will vote on this critical amendment in the General Election on November 3, 2026—a legacy Rocky was proud to leave behind. To those who knew him, Rocky was far more than a public figure.
He was a man of deep conviction and quiet humility. As his nephew, Kolby DeWitt, shared:
“The two positions Rocky held were honors that he did not take for granted. Rocky understood that he was a caretaker of the two seats that he was elected to, and that they ultimately belong to Iowans. I consider myself blessed to have been part of Rocky’s family, and my opportunity to walk with him through the difficulties and triumphs of public service.”
Jake Jungers, campaign treasurer for De Witt’s senate run, added:
“Rocky was a fighter, true winner, and a fierce defender for the Second Amendment as a Life Member of the National Rifle Association. As Rocky’s campaign treasurer, he was a true steward of all donations. Rocky didn’t lead by popular opinion alone, but by great example.”
Throughout his illness, Rocky faced each day with courage, dignity, and determination. He continued to serve the people of Iowa while battling cancer, never letting his health diminish his commitment to the responsibilities entrusted to him.
Rocky L. De Witt’s passing is a tremendous loss to the state of Iowa, to his constituents, and to all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of public service defined by principle, patriotism, and purpose.
He will be deeply missed but remembered always—as a leader, a protector of freedom, and above all, a man who lived to serve others with honor.
