CULVER CITY, Calif. – The California Highway Patrol is mourning the loss of Officer Miguel Cano, who was tragically killed in a vehicle crash early Tuesday morning. Officer Cano, 34, was involved in the fatal incident at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Bristol Parkway, just north of Green Valley Circle in Culver City.
At the time of the crash, Officer Cano and his partner had just completed the arrest of a suspect for possession of drugs and an illegal weapon. The officers were en route to process the detainee when tragedy struck.
While driving, Officer Cano told his partner he did not feel well. Moments later, he lost control of the patrol vehicle, which veered off the roadway and collided with a tree.
First responders arrived quickly at the scene, and Officer Cano was transported to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His partner and the suspect sustained minor injuries and are expected to recover.
Preliminary findings suggest that Officer Cano may have suffered a medical emergency while driving, causing him to lose consciousness and crash. A full investigation into the cause of the crash has been launched by local and departmental authorities.
Officer Cano had served with the California Highway Patrol for two years, earning a reputation as a dedicated, compassionate, and hardworking officer. His death has left a deep void within the department and among those who knew him.
He is survived by his wife and parents, who are now grappling with an unimaginable loss.
“Officer Cano embodied the spirit of service and commitment that defines the California Highway Patrol,” said a CHP spokesperson. “Our hearts are with his family, his colleagues, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him.”
