It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Chip Hopkins, a beloved former social science teacher and service facilitator at Granite School District in Utah. Chip, a longtime resident of Holladay, passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a community of students, friends, and loved ones who will never forget his warmth, compassion, and unwavering dedication to others.
For more than 30 years, Chip served as an educator in the Granite School District, where he taught social science with a passion that went beyond the classroom. His approach to teaching was rooted in connection — he didn’t just teach history and civics; he made his students feel seen, heard, and valued.
Whether he was mentoring a struggling student or sharing life lessons from his own journey, Chip always led with empathy and sincerity. It was not uncommon for students to stay in touch with him long after graduation, a testament to the lifelong impact he had on those fortunate enough to sit in his classroom.
In addition to his teaching, Chip was a tireless community servant. He volunteered his time to numerous causes and always made space to listen, to help, and to serve.
His kindness was not performative; it was foundational. He believed in radical compassion — that no act of love was ever too small, and that true strength came from lifting others up.
From helping organize school events and service projects to offering support to families in need, Chip never hesitated to show up. He held a Master’s degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment from Walden University, reflecting his commitment to constantly evolving as an educator and bettering the lives of his students.
But his true gift was the way he shared his heart — in his stories, his lessons, and the way he greeted each person with warmth and sincerity. Originally from Rowayton, Chip made Utah his home for many years.
His presence was a gift to the communities of Holladay, Salt Lake City, and the broader Granite School District. Friends, colleagues, and former students have expressed shock and heartbreak at the news of his passing.
“Unbelievably sad and shocked to hear about the passing of Chip Hopkins,” one tribute read. “It is incredibly hard to wake up to this world knowing he isn’t physically here spreading more joy, more love, more radical compassion — especially now, when we need it (and him) the most.”
Chip’s life will be honored and remembered with a viewing on Sunday, July 13th, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Stark Funeral Home (3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, UT).
Following the viewing, a Celebration of Life will take place at Canyon Rim Park (3100 Grace Street, Millcreek, UT), where family, friends, students, and community members are invited to gather in remembrance.
In this time of grief, the legacy of Chip Hopkins continues in the countless lives he touched — not only through his teaching but through his example of how to live with integrity, love, and purpose.
May his memory inspire others to lead with kindness and live with intention, just as he did every day.
Rest in peace, Chip. You will be dearly missed and forever remembered.
