It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of John Concannon, a beloved figure in the California wine community and a fourth-generation steward of the historic Concannon Vineyard in Livermore, California. John Concannon passed away suddenly, leaving behind a legacy rich in family heritage, community leadership, and unwavering dedication to the craft of winemaking.
Born and raised in Livermore, John Concannon grew up surrounded by the vines, values, and vision of his great-grandfather, James Concannon, who founded Concannon Vineyard in 1883. From an early age, John developed a passion for viticulture and storytelling—qualities that made him not only a respected leader in the wine industry but also a treasured ambassador for Livermore Valley’s heritage and potential.
For decades, John served as a guiding force for the vineyard, navigating it through times of change while preserving the tradition and quality that made Concannon a household name. Under his stewardship, the winery continued to thrive, producing exceptional wines and deepening its connection to the community. His leadership helped elevate the Livermore Valley as a respected wine region, both nationally and globally.
John Concannon’s death has sent waves of grief through the Livermore community and the broader California wine world. Known for his warmth, humility, and tireless advocacy for the region, John was more than a winemaker—he was a mentor, a friend, and a visionary. His efforts to promote sustainable farming, preserve agricultural land, and educate the next generation of winemakers have left a lasting imprint.
John Concannon passed away doing what he loved most—working among the vines, engaging with guests, and championing the legacy of Concannon Vineyard. His sudden passing was a shock to many who saw in him a tireless and enduring presence. Yet even in grief, there is profound gratitude for the impact he made during his lifetime.
A proud Livermore native, John attended local schools and later pursued studies in viticulture and business. His leadership extended beyond the vineyard gates. He was an active member of the Livermore Valley Winegrowers Association, a supporter of local non-profits, and a regular presence at community events. He often said that the vineyard’s success was inseparable from the strength of the Livermore community—and he lived by that belief.
4th Generation Steward of Concannon Vineyard John Concannon Dies Suddenly—and yet, his spirit endures in every bottle that bears the Concannon label, in every young vintner he mentored, and in every story told on the vineyard’s sunlit terrace. He is survived by his wife, children, extended family, and a devoted team at the vineyard who will continue his mission with passion and pride.
A public memorial service will be held at Concannon Vineyard to honor his memory and celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to local agricultural education programs or land preservation efforts—causes close to John’s heart.
