Montreal police have launched an active investigation following a fatal shooting that occurred early Tuesday morning in a downtown park. A man in his 30s was shot and killed at Place de la Paix, a small park located near the intersection of Saint-Laurent Boulevard and René-Lévesque Boulevard, shortly after 12:45 a.m.
According to the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), the victim was shot multiple times by an unknown assailant who fled the scene before officers arrived. The area, known for its proximity to nightlife and arts venues, became the site of a tragic and violent crime that has shaken the surrounding community.
“According to initial reports, a suspect fired shots at the victim and then fled before police arrived,” said Constable Caroline Chèvrefils, spokesperson for the SPVM. Upon arrival, officers found the man lying in the park with critical injuries. Paramedics on the scene immediately began CPR and attempted to stabilize him, but despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead a short time later.
As of Tuesday morning, the identity of the victim had not yet been officially confirmed. His death marks another grim chapter in a recent uptick of gun violence seen in Montreal and other major Canadian cities, raising concerns about public safety and the availability of illegal firearms.
The area around Place de la Paix was quickly secured by police, with a security perimeter established to preserve the crime scene. Throughout the morning, members of the SPVM’s Major Crimes Section were seen collecting evidence, photographing the scene, and speaking with potential witnesses.
“We are taking this investigation very seriously,” said a police spokesperson. “The Major Crimes team is handling the case, and we’re working to piece together exactly what happened and why.”
In the hours following the shooting, investigators canvassed the area, interviewing witnesses and gathering details about the suspect and the moments leading up to the incident. Police also indicated that they would be reviewing nearby surveillance cameras in hopes that the footage may have captured the suspect’s identity or direction of flight. Any potential recordings from businesses or traffic cameras near the park could prove crucial in solving the case.
As of early Tuesday, no arrests had been made, and the suspect remained at large. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Tipsters can remain anonymous by contacting Info-Crime Montreal.
The incident has sparked concern among residents and those who frequent the downtown core, especially given the early hour of the shooting and the open, public setting. Community leaders are calling for increased police presence in vulnerable areas and renewed focus on crime prevention.
The Montreal police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing and are working to establish a motive. The SPVM has not ruled out any possibilities, including whether the victim may have been targeted.
As the city awaits more answers, the tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the need for continued vigilance and community cooperation in the face of senseless.
