The Nueces County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man found dead in a park bathroom in Agua Dulce as 23-year-old Andres Canas. The discovery was made shortly after noon on Thursday, July 10, at Bobby Ray and Opal A. Younts Park, shocking the quiet South Texas community and prompting an active homicide investigation.
According to Nueces County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Roland Martinez, Canas was found with a gunshot wound to the head. The nature of the injury led authorities to quickly classify the death as suspicious, and the case is now being treated as a homicide.
Law enforcement and forensic personnel responded to the scene immediately after the discovery was reported. The park, normally a peaceful location for family outings and community gatherings, was quickly cordoned off as investigators began processing the scene for evidence.
Public Information Officer Natalie Williams confirmed that the Sheriff’s Office has identified “persons of interest” in connection with the case. However, no arrests have been made, and officials have yet to disclose further details about potential suspects or a possible motive. “We are actively working leads and continue to gather information,” Williams said. “This remains an open and active homicide investigation.”
As of now, investigators have not stated whether the shooting took place in the bathroom or if Canas was moved there after the fact. Surveillance footage from the park and nearby areas is being reviewed, and authorities are asking for the public’s assistance in helping piece together the events leading up to Canas’ death.
Canas’ death has stunned the small community of Agua Dulce, where violent crime is relatively rare. Friends and neighbors described him as a kind and outgoing young man who had his whole life ahead of him. Though much remains unknown about the circumstances surrounding his death, the impact of the tragedy has been deeply felt.
“He was just 23,” said a family friend who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s hard to imagine someone so young and full of life being taken like this. We just want justice for Andres and answers for his family.”
Authorities are encouraging anyone who may have been in the area of Bobby Ray and Opal A. Younts Park on the morning or afternoon of July 10 to come forward with any information—no matter how minor it may seem. Investigators believe that community cooperation could be critical in identifying those responsible and bringing closure to the grieving family.

As the investigation continues, the Canas family is left grappling with unimaginable loss. A young life was ended far too soon, and the community now waits for justice to be served. Authorities have assured the public that every effort is being made to solve the case and ensure the safety of Agua Dulce residents.
