Dr. Yoong was widely regarded as a promising and brilliant surgeon, whose contributions extended far beyond the operating theatre. He played a central role in developing and expanding Malaysia’s liver transplant program, particularly during his time at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC).
His vision, expertise, and tireless work helped to shape a service that has saved countless lives and provided hope to many families—especially children in desperate need of life-saving procedures.
During his tenure at UMMC, Dr. Yoong was instrumental in establishing the liver transplant program in collaboration with international partners, including Hong Kong and the renowned Renji Hospital at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Despite limited financial resources, he worked relentlessly with his team to make the program a reality. His quiet leadership and steadfast commitment made him not only a skilled clinician but also a respected team builder and mentor.
A former director of UMMC shared a touching tribute, recalling the early days of building the transplant program together. “I remember Yoong telling me over the phone that he was leaving for private practice for various reasons,” he wrote.
“He promised me he would continue to support and help develop the liver transplant from time to time. He lived up to his words.” Just days before his passing, Dr. Yoong proudly shared that he had recently performed a deceased donor transplant at UMMC, reaffirming his deep connection and commitment to the institution and its mission.
