KANSAS CITY, KANSAS — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating a tragic officer-involved shooting that claimed the life of Deputy Elijah Ming, a 34-year-old member of the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Ming was fatally shot while responding to a domestic disturbance call on the afternoon of Saturday, July 26, 2025.
The deadly incident occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, July 26, 2025, at a residence located at 2627 S. 30th Street in Kansas City, Kansas. At approximately 3:30 p.m., a woman contacted law enforcement requesting a police escort while she moved out of the home due to safety concerns. She reported that a man inside the residence, later identified as Shawn Harris, 38, had previously threatened her friends with a firearm when they attempted to help her.
Around 3:45 p.m., Deputy Ming and an officer from the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department (KCKPD) arrived at the residence to assist. As they approached the front door, Harris opened fire from inside the house. Deputy Ming was struck by multiple rounds. The KCKPD officer was not injured.
Additional officers quickly responded to the scene. As they attempted to render aid to the wounded deputy, Harris remained barricaded inside the residence and exchanged gunfire with law enforcement officers. During the confrontation, Harris was also shot.
Deputy Ming was rushed to a local hospital, but despite lifesaving efforts, he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Negotiations with Harris continued over the phone until just after 5:00 p.m., when he surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and is currently reported to be in good condition.
The KBI has stated that this investigation remains active and ongoing. The details released at this time are preliminary and based on early witness statements, evidence collected at the scene, and official reports. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be presented to the Wyandotte County District Attorney for review and potential charges.
Deputy Elijah Ming is remembered as a dedicated public servant who gave his life in the line of duty, protecting others. His death is a profound loss to his department, his community, and to all who knew and served alongside him. Plans for public memorial services will be announced in the coming days as the community joins together to honor his sacrifice.
