Bret Grant, 66, of Waupun, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2025, surrounded by the people who loved him most. Born on August 28, 1958, to James Grant and Carol Nelson, Bret was a 1977 graduate of Waupun High School.
A man of quiet strength and unwavering devotion, Bret was a beloved father, mentor, coach, and public servant. He dedicated his career to serving others as a probation and parole agent, bringing compassion, fairness, and accountability to every life he touched. Known for believing in second chances, Bret inspired those around him to see the good in themselves.
For over 35 years, Bret also devoted himself to coaching youth sports in Waupun. Whether on the soccer field, baseball diamond, or ice rink, he taught not just the rules of the game, but teamwork, discipline, humility, and heart. Generations of young athletes and their families remember his guidance and unwavering support.
Bret Grant’s life was a steady presence in the community, and his legacy of service, mentorship, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him.
At the center of his world were his children: Celine, Carl, and Cierra, who were the pride and joy of his life. He spent many cherished years married to Marcia Grant, the mother of his children, with whom he built a foundation of family, laughter, and love. Bret’s heart was as extraordinary as his presence.
He carried a rare kindness that drew people in and made them feel seen and valued. His life was also filled with music — his gift of song took him across the country, where he shared his voice and touched countless hearts. His love for music was not just a talent but a reflection of his joyful, soulful spirit.
Bret’s love for the game of soccer extended far beyond coaching. In his younger years, he played professional soccer and traveled the world, experiencing cultures and building friendships across countries through a sport he loved. Bret fought a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Even in the hardest moments, he never let the illness define him. He continued to show up — with grace, with humor, and with the same steady heart he always carried. His strength, even in suffering, was a quiet testament to the kind of man he was. He will be remembered for his selflessness, his calming presence, his deep love for his children, and his lifelong commitment to his work and his community. His legacy lives on in every life he touched — and most of all, in the hearts of those who loved him most.
Bret is survived by his three children: Celine Grant, Cierra Grant (Andy Skarda), and Carl Grant (Hannah Loomans); parents: James (Karen) Grant and Carol (Jeff Frye) Nelson; and sister, Andrea (Joel) Brown; dogs, Yogi and Chief; and many nieces, nephews, and special close friends.
Bret was preceded in death by his grandparents; Carl and Marie Nelson, Dorothy Grant and James Grant Sr.; parents-in-law, Ardis and Harold Hopp; and nephew, Blaine Hopp.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Waupun Ice Arena with the date to be determined.
