CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A community in northeast Charlotte is grieving and seeking answers after a tragic shooting took the life of one individual late Thursday night. According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD), officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire in the 1000 block of Merrick Street, near the North Tryon Street corridor, around 11:30 p.m. on June 26, 2025.
When officers arrived at the scene—a quiet residential neighborhood—they discovered a victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Despite the rapid response of first responders, the victim tragically succumbed to their injuries before they could be transported to a hospital. Their identity has not yet been released as authorities work to notify next of kin.
At this time, CMPD has not disclosed what may have led to the deadly shooting. Investigators remained on the scene well into the early morning hours, combing the area for evidence, interviewing neighbors, and seeking any potential witnesses who may have seen or heard something that could shed light on what happened. As of Friday morning, no arrests have been announced, and no suspects have been publicly identified.
Residents in the area are stunned and heartbroken by the violence. Merrick Street, like many neighborhoods across Charlotte, is home to families, children, and hardworking individuals who now find themselves shaken by the reality of a violent act so close to home. Neighbors described hearing a series of gunshots, followed by sirens, and watching in disbelief as police blocked off the street and began their investigation.
Charlotte’s homicide detectives are urging anyone with information to come forward. Whether it’s surveillance footage from home security cameras, dashcam videos, or firsthand accounts, even the smallest detail may help bring justice to the victim and closure to their family. Tipsters can remain anonymous by contacting Crime Stoppers.
This marks another heartbreaking addition to Charlotte’s growing list of gun violence victims in 2025. City officials, community leaders, and residents alike continue to call for meaningful solutions to the escalating violence, from community engagement initiatives to expanded mental health resources and crime prevention strategies.
As the investigation continues, friends and family of the victim are left to mourn a life taken too soon. Grief counselors and local advocates are expected to offer support to the impacted community in the coming days.
CMPD asks that anyone with information about the shooting contact their homicide unit or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or online
The victim’s identity and further details surrounding the case will be released as they become available. For now, the community waits—mourning, searching for answers, and hoping that justice will be served.
