VALENCIA, Calif. — Authorities are investigating the death of Carrie Romney, 64, the sister-in-law of former U.S. Senator and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, after she was found dead Friday evening in Valencia.
According to ABC News, Romney’s body was discovered near a parking garage in the Town Center area. Preliminary reports suggest she may have jumped or fallen from the structure, though investigators have not yet determined the circumstances surrounding her death.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has listed her cause of death as “deferred” pending the results of toxicology tests. The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department confirmed it is conducting a full death investigation.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as they await official findings from the coroner’s office.
Carrie Romney was married into one of the country’s most prominent political families. Her brother-in-law, Mitt Romney, served as Governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007, was the Republican nominee for president in 2012, and most recently served as U.S. Senator from Utah from 2019 until 2025.
The Romney family has not yet issued a public statement, but those close to them describe the loss as heartbreaking and deeply felt.
