KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of 7-year-old Austin Cerda Rodriguez, a bright, curious, and deeply loved child with autism, who tragically drowned on October 21st after leaving his home around 10 p.m. and entering the pond behind the house.
Austin’s passing has left an unimaginable void for his parents, Cesar Avila, who has raised Austin since infancy, and Michelle Rodriguez, as well as his extended family and all who knew him. His warmth, curiosity, and joyful spirit touched countless lives, making his sudden death all the more devastating.
The tragedy also underscores a sobering reality for families of children with autism. Studies show that children with autism are 160 times more likely to die from drowning than their neurotypical peers. In Florida, a state abundant with lakes, ponds, and pools, drowning remains one of the leading causes of death among children with autism, according to the Autism Society of Florida.
In memory of Austin and to support his grieving family, a Meal Train has been created so members of the community can provide the family with dinners to help ease some of the burdens during this incredibly difficult time.
Those who wish to offer a meal, donation, or message of support can do so at: https://www.giveinkind.com/inkinds/Q3P9N3P
Every act of kindness, donation, or share helps lift Cesar and Michelle during this period of sorrow and ensures that Austin’s light continues to guide and inspire others.
