Newark, NJ — The Irvington and Newark communities are reeling after a devastating act of violence claimed the life of 16-year-old Ziad Cook, a beloved student-athlete at Irvington High School. The shooting occurred Thursday evening in Newark’s West Ward and also left another teen in critical condition.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, police responded to the 200 block of Brookdale Avenue, near 227 Brookdale, just after 6:00 p.m. There, officers discovered two teenage males suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were rushed to University Hospital.
Despite emergency efforts, Ziad Cook was pronounced dead at 9:19 p.m. The second victim, a 17-year-old male whose name has not been released, remains hospitalized and in critical condition as of Friday.
Ziad was a rising junior and standout member of the Irvington High School football team. Known for his discipline, humility, and strong work ethic, he had dreams of making it to college through both academics and sports. Coaches remember him as a natural leader on and off the field, while teachers describe him as quiet, focused, and full of potential.
“He was one of those kids who did everything right,” said one of his teachers, fighting back tears. “He came to class, he respected everyone, and he worked hard at everything he did. This is just devastating.”
Students and staff gathered Friday morning in silence and sorrow, some laying flowers outside the school while others embraced in tears. The district has brought in grief counselors to support students as they process the loss of a peer who was, by all accounts, an inspiration to many.
“He was more than just a football player,” said a teammate. “Ziad was a brother, a friend, someone you could always count on. He had dreams, man. This wasn’t supposed to happen.”
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force has taken over the investigation. As of now, no arrests have been made and authorities have not disclosed a motive behind the senseless shooting. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Ziad’s tragic death is a grim reminder of the gun violence affecting communities and cutting young lives short far too often. As his family, friends, and school mourn this tremendous loss, many are calling for justice—and peace.
A candlelight vigil is being organized by students and community members in Ziad’s honor, details of which will be announced in the coming days.
