OAKLAND, Calif. — A deep sense of grief and heartbreak has settled over the city of Oakland as the community mourns the tragic loss of 17-year-old Lazarvis Brown, who was fatally shot in a violent incident that unfolded in the early morning hours of June 25, 2025. The Alameda County Coroner’s Office has confirmed Lazarvis’s identity, as the investigation into the senseless act of violence continues.
According to Oakland police, the shooting occurred shortly after midnight in a residential area already too familiar with gun violence. When officers arrived at the scene, they found three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Lazarvis was pronounced dead at the scene, while two others—whose names have not yet been released—were rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
For the family of Lazarvis Brown, the news has been shattering. A young life filled with promise, laughter, and love was stolen far too soon. Lazarvis, affectionately known to many as “Zay,” was just months away from beginning his senior year of high school. Friends describe him as respectful, funny, and passionate about music and basketball. He had dreams of attending college and creating a better life for himself and his family.
“He was the kind of kid who had a big heart,” one neighbor shared. “He always looked out for his little brother, helped carry groceries for his grandma, and made people laugh. He had so much life ahead of him.”
Details surrounding the motive of the shooting remain under investigation. Police have not confirmed whether Lazarvis was the intended target or caught in the crossfire of an escalating dispute. No arrests have been made as of yet, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong issued a statement expressing deep condolences to the family and vowing to bring those responsible to justice. “A child should never be taken from this world by violence. We are committed to doing everything in our power to find the individual or individuals responsible for this tragedy. Our hearts are with the Brown family during this unimaginable time.”
Community activists and local leaders are calling for increased efforts to curb youth violence and provide safe spaces and opportunities for Oakland’s young people. Vigils are already being planned to honor Lazarvis’s memory, and support is pouring in for his family, who are now facing the unimaginable pain of burying their teenage son.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with funeral costs and to support the family during this devastating time.
As Oakland mourns the loss of another young life to gun violence, Lazarvis Brown is remembered not for the tragic way he died, but for the vibrant way he lived—full of heart, ambition, and a smile that could light up any room.
Rest in peace, Lazarvis “Zay” Brown. Your community will never forget you.
