Eastern Illinois University was placed on lockdown early Monday after reports of shots being fired near campus, university officials said.
The university issued an emergency alert, directing students, faculty, and staff to shelter in place. The alert advised the campus community to avoid the area while police responded.
Charleston Police and Eastern Illinois University Police were on the scene Monday morning. No injuries were immediately reported, and authorities have not released information about a possible suspect.
Students said they received text and email alerts instructing them to stay indoors and secure doors. Several streets near campus were closed as officers searched the area.
