A tragic shooting near Assata High School on Milwaukee’s north side has left an 18-year-old student dead and a 17-year-old suspect injured following what police say was an attempted robbery that escalated into gunfire.
According to Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS), the incident began around 11:30 a.m. on November 14, when the 18-year-old male student left campus after receiving early dismissal. Roughly 20 minutes later, near W. Glendale Avenue and N. Hopkins Street, several suspects confronted the student in an attempt to rob him, prompting shots to be fired.
Despite his injuries, the student managed to make his way back to Assata High School. Staff immediately called 911 and initiated a lockdown, securing all doors and turning off lights in accordance with district safety protocols.
The student was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Police say one of the suspects—identified as a 17-year-old male—was also shot during the confrontation. He was transported to the hospital for treatment and has since been taken into custody. Authorities have not yet released further details regarding additional suspects or the circumstances leading to the gunfire.
Milwaukee Police remained at the scene throughout the lockdown. Once the area was deemed safe, the lockdown was lifted, and families were directed to pick up students on the 35th Street side of the building. Students relying on bus transportation were instructed to walk to Hampton Avenue, though those who preferred to stay inside were allowed to remain until the regular dismissal time.
