A tragic crash Thursday morning on I-24 Westbound has left the Clarksville community mourning the loss of 52-year-old Michael Atzert, who died when his Jeep Wrangler plunged into the Red River following a collision with another vehicle.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) reports that the crash occurred near mile marker 9.6 and involved two vehicles. A silver Lincoln Town Car, driven by 28-year-old James Centers and carrying an infant, collided with Atzert’s Jeep. Following the impact, both vehicles left the roadway. The Lincoln came to rest in a wooded area near the riverbank, while the Jeep went down the embankment into the river. Thankfully, neither Centers nor the child were injured.
Emergency responders from Clarksville and the THP arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, Atzert was pronounced dead at the scene. Westbound traffic was blocked for several hours while authorities conducted rescue operations and began their investigation.
Authorities say criminal charges against Centers are pending, and the investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing.
Friends, family, and neighbors are now grappling with the sudden loss of Atzert. Remembered as a devoted father and valued member of the community, his death has left a profound void for those who knew him. Local leaders and residents are expressing their condolences, emphasizing the importance of supporting one another during this difficult time.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly lives can be changed in an instant. As the THP continues its investigation, the community comes together in grief—holding Atzert’s loved ones in their thoughts and prayers, and honoring the life of a man taken far too soon.
