A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded on Detroit’s east side Friday evening, June 27, as gunfire tore through a peaceful gathering at a park near Denby High School, leaving two young lives lost and a community in mourning. The victims have now been identified as 4-
year-old Samir Josiah Grubbs and 18-year-old Davyion (last name not yet released), both innocent lives caught in a senseless act of violence.According to Detroit police, the shooting occurred around 7:40 p.m. in a park on Nottingham Road, where families and community members had gathered in the summer evening.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots before chaos erupted, with people scrambling for cover and children crying. Samir, just four years old, was struck by gunfire and rushed to the hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries. Davyion, who was reportedly near Samir at the time of the shooting, was also critically injured and later pronounced dead.
Investigators believe the shooting may have stemmed from an altercation involving individuals unrelated to the young victims. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses as they work to identify those responsible. No arrests had been made as of Saturday morning.
The loss of Samir, a joyful preschooler remembered for his bright smile and playful spirit, and Davyion, an aspiring young adult with his life ahead of him, has left family, friends, and community members devastated. A growing memorial of candles, balloons, and stuffed animals marks the site of the shooting as grief grips the neighborhood.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and Police Chief James White both expressed deep sorrow and renewed calls to address gun violence in the city. “No child should ever lose their life in a park,” Chief White said. “We will not rest until justice is served.”
