A tragic incident unfolded Friday afternoon after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a westbound CSX freight train, according to the Ravenna Police Department.
Authorities say the collision occurred at approximately 2:51 p.m. on the railroad tracks located between Chestnut Street and Diamond Street, an area that sees regular train traffic and is frequently used as a walking path by some residents despite posted warnings.
Emergency crews responded immediately after dispatch received reports of a person being hit by a train. Upon arrival, first responders confirmed that the pedestrian had been fatally injured. The victim’s identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
Police have not disclosed the circumstances leading up to the fatal collision, including whether the victim was attempting to cross the tracks or was on the tracks for another reason. CSX officials are assisting in the investigation, and train traffic in the area was temporarily halted while crews worked at the scene.
