A massive law-enforcement operation unfolded Friday night after reports of an active shooter at the Westfield Valley Fair Mall, located at 2855 Stevens Creek Boulevard on the San Jose–Santa Clara border.
The incident began shortly after 7 p.m., when multiple 911 calls reported gunfire inside the busy shopping center. Within minutes, more than two dozen police units from agencies across Santa Clara County and the greater Bay Area converged on the mall. Officers armed with rifles entered the building as patrol vehicles, tactical trucks, and armored response units set up a perimeter outside.
Shoppers described scenes of sudden panic as the sound of gunfire rippled through parts of the mall. Witnesses said people ran for exits, ducked behind kiosks, or sheltered inside stockrooms as store employees locked their gates. “Everyone just scattered. People were crying and trying to get out as fast as they could,” said one shopper who had been near the food court at the time.
Authorities confirmed that multiple shots were fired, triggering an immediate lockdown. SWAT teams and local police conducted a store-by-store sweep, guiding groups of evacuees outside with their hands raised. Fire crews and ambulances staged outside the mall as a precaution.
According to early information from emergency responders, two people were injured during the incident. Their conditions have not yet been released, and officials have not confirmed whether their injuries resulted directly from gunfire or occurred during the chaos.
Police have not indicated whether a suspect has been located or taken into custody. Investigators are interviewing witnesses and reviewing security footage as they work to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
Authorities continue to urge the public to avoid the area while law-enforcement personnel secure the scene and conduct their investigation. Surrounding roads have been shut down, causing significant traffic delays as emergency vehicles continue to arrive.
Family members and friends gathered outside the mall Friday night, waiting anxiously for updates as officers escorted shaken shoppers out of the building.
