
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. –A tragic act of violence has left the Garden Hills neighborhood of Champaign in mourning after 16-year-old Erion Johnson was fatally shot early Sunday morning. Another 16-year-old boy was also critically injured in the same incident.
The Champaign Police Department responded to reports of gunfire with injuries around 12:01 a.m. in the 1500 block of Holly Hill Drive. When officers arrived at the scene, they found two teenage males lying unconscious in the front yard of a residence, both suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical personnel immediately rendered aid and transported both victims to a local hospital. Tragically, Erion Johnson was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The second teen remains in critical condition, fighting for his life.
As of Sunday morning, Champaign Police Lieutenant Aaron Lack and other officers were actively canvassing the neighborhood, speaking with residents and collecting potential evidence. The Crime Scene Unit maintained a visible presence, with their van stationed along Holly Hill Drive as the investigation continued.
The shooting has deeply shaken the community, prompting renewed calls for unity and cooperation in efforts to reduce youth violence.
