The Fargo and West Fargo communities are grieving the devastating loss of Matt Ellison, a cherished resident whose kindness, leadership, and devotion to others made him a beloved figure across the region. Matt’s sudden passing has left an irreplaceable void in the lives of his family, friends, colleagues, athletes, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Matt was a man whose life was defined by giving—giving his time, his talents, his compassion, and his heart. For more than six years, he proudly served as the Golf Tournament Director for the Landon’s Light Foundation, where he dedicated himself to planning, organizing, and directing the annual charity golf tournament hosting 36 teams and 144 players. His passion for the event went far beyond logistics; Matt poured himself into securing sponsorships, building relationships, and raising crucial funds that directly uplifted children and families facing unimaginable challenges. His work changed lives—and his impact will continue to be felt for years to come.
Matt’s love for sports and mentorship shone brightly in his roles as a Youth Baseball Coach with West Fargo Baseball Inc. and a Youth Hockey Coach with the West Fargo Stampede. Whether standing on the ice, in the dugout, or alongside parents and players, Matt embodied the true spirit of a coach—patient, encouraging, and dedicated to helping young athletes grow not only in skill but in character. His players admired him, parents trusted him, and fellow coaches respected him deeply. He leaves behind a legacy of young lives shaped by his guidance and example.
A proud supporter of athletics and his community, Matt also spent meaningful time at Newman Outdoor Field and held strong ties to the University of North Dakota, where his passion for sports and community involvement continued to flourish.
To his family, Matt was a devoted and loving presence whose support was unwavering. To his friends, he was a loyal confidant with a warm smile and a generous spirit. To his community, he was a pillar—steady, kind, and dedicated to making a difference wherever he stood.
The loss of Matt Ellison is felt far and wide, but the legacy he leaves behind is one of service, compassion, and heart. His influence will continue to live on through every young athlete he coached, every life touched through Landon’s Light Foundation, and every individual who felt uplifted by his kindness.
