CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kansas — A quiet stretch of highway in Cherokee County became the scene of a heartbreaking tragedy early Saturday morning, claiming the life of a young woman whose future was just beginning. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that at approximately 6 a.m., a fatal rollover crash occurred on U.S. Highway 400, east of Baxter Springs, Kansas, leaving a community in mourning.
The victim was identified as Meredith Wagner, a 19-year-old from Columbus, Kansas. Troopers said Wagner was driving a 1994 Chevrolet Blazer westbound on U.S. 400 near milepost 456, roughly two miles east of Baxter Springs, when the vehicle left the roadway. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol’s crash narrative, the SUV ran off the road to the left, and as Wagner attempted to correct, the vehicle crossed back over the highway, left the roadway on the right, and overturned.
During the violent rollover, Wagner was ejected from the vehicle, and investigators stated that she was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. She suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Emergency crews responded quickly, but there was nothing that could be done to save her. The highway was closed for approximately three hours as troopers conducted a thorough investigation into the crash and worked to clear the scene. Larison Towing was called in to remove the vehicle and debris from the roadway.
Following the investigation, Wagner’s body was transported to Derfelt Funeral Home in Galena, Kansas, where arrangements are expected to be handled for her family.
