Blount County, Tennessee — The Blount County community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Deputy Justin Mowery, who was killed in the line of duty in a car crash while working his patrol shift late Sunday afternoon. His death has left a profound void in the hearts of his family, fellow deputies, and the many lives he touched through his service.
Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong confirmed the tragic loss and shared his deep sorrow. “I am heartbroken. This is devastating for his family, his shift-mates, this agency, and our community,” Sheriff Berrong said. He expressed gratitude to the Tennessee Highway Patrol for their swift response and noted that authorities are working together to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash. He also thanked surrounding law enforcement agencies across the state for their immediate support and offers of assistance.
Deputy Mowery was just 30 years old, yet his commitment to service and public safety was evident throughout his career. Before joining the Blount County Sheriff’s Office, he served as a security officer at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Driven by a strong desire to protect and serve, he began his career with the BCSO in May 2020 and attended the BCSO Regional Training Academy, graduating from Class 021 in October of that year.
Following his graduation, Deputy Mowery was assigned to the evening shift as a patrol deputy, where he quickly earned the respect of his colleagues for his professionalism, dedication, and teamwork. In December 2021, he achieved one of his career goals by earning a coveted position on the Sheriff’s SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team, a role he proudly served in until his passing.
Deputy Mowery is remembered not only as a courageous law enforcement officer, but as a devoted colleague and a valued member of the Blount County community. His willingness to step forward in service, even in the face of danger, reflects the highest ideals of the badge he wore.
As the community mourns, Sheriff Berrong asked for continued prayers and support. “Please pray for Deputy Mowery’s family, and pray for our deputies,” he said.
Deputy Justin Mowery’s sacrifice will never be forgotten. His legacy of service, courage, and dedication will live on in the hearts of those who knew him and in the community he so faithfully served.
