A family in South Texas is grieving an unimaginable loss after 41-year-old David Adam Garza was shot and killed Thursday night in Hargill, Texas, leaving behind two young children and a community in mourning.
According to investigators, Garza was involved in an altercation before attempting to leave the area in his white Toyota Tundra. Authorities say another individual followed him and fired multiple gunshots into his vehicle. Garza was struck during the attack and later crashed into a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 23-year-old suspect has since been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to piece together the events leading up to the deadly shooting.
Garza, who worked in construction, had recently returned home due to a shoulder injury. Loved ones say he was a devoted father who worked hard to support his family. He leaves behind his 12-year-old daughter, Leyla Garza, and his 15-year-old son, Jesus David Garza, along with extended family now facing the sudden and painful task of planning his funeral, scheduled to take place in Edinburg later this week.
In the days following her father’s death, 12-year-old Leyla reached out to share her grief, describing a pain she and her brother have never experienced before. She said it is “hard to believe he’s gone,” and expressed the deep heartbreak of losing her father at such a young age.
When asked what she would say to the person accused of taking her father’s life, Leyla’s words reflected both sorrow and faith. “I hope you regret what you did, and I hope God forgives you for it,” she said. “I don’t know who gave you the right to take my father’s life.”
As the Garza family prepares to lay David to rest, their story has touched many, highlighting the devastating ripple effects of gun violence—especially on children left behind to navigate life without a parent.
This remains a developing case, and authorities are expected to release additional information as proceedings move forward.
