A teenage girl is still missing and her mother and a Good Samaritan who tried to rescue them both have been confirmed dead aftr Friday’s incident ,A teenage girl who was swept away by stormy seas on Friday (January 2) was ‘wave watching’ when tragedy stuck, witnesses have said.
The unnamed 15-year-old girl, who is still missing, is said to have descended concrete steps in Withernsea, East Yorkshire. Seconds earlier, she had been standing at the summit of the steps alongside her mother.
Her mum had momentarily moved away with the family dog, which was on a lead. Upon hearing desperate cries for assistance, she raced back to aid her daughter and pursued her as she was dragged along the shoreline, wading into the water and coming within inches of grasping her from the beach.
Sadly, conditions proved too severe. Both the mother and a good Samaritan who had stepped in to help were dragged out to sea.Mark Ratcliffe, 67, courageously battled terrifying 12ft waves after hearing the 15-year-old girl’s desperate cries for assistance. He rushed to help alongside her mother as she had already entered the water.
Reports suggest both adults came tantalizingly close to rescuing the teenager. However, the pair were tragically overwhelmed by the dreadful conditions.
