A violent single-vehicle crash claimed the life of a 43-year-old man from Lodi after his car left the roadway at a high rate of speed, became airborne, and tumbled roughly 400 feet down a steep embankment, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials said the driver was traveling too fast as he approached a curve in the road when he lost control of the vehicle. The car launched off the roadway, went airborne, and rolled multiple times before coming to rest far below the roadway.
Emergency crews responded to the scene, but the driver sustained fatal injuries in the crash. Authorities have not released the man’s name pending notification of next of kin.
Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash, including speed and roadway conditions. CHP officials are reminding drivers that excessive speed, especially on curved or rural roads, significantly increases the risk of losing control and suffering catastrophic injuries.
The incident remains under investigation.
