A major emergency response is underway in Ashton-in-Makerfield after reports of an incident involving a firearm near Byrchall High School on Warrington Road.
Shortly after noon, witnesses reported seeing a large deployment of emergency services, including Greater Manchester Police, ambulance crews, EMS, and a police helicopter circling above the area. Officers from the Ashton Neighbourhood Policing Team confirmed they were responding to a “sensitive incident” and placed both the school and surrounding areas on lockdown as a precaution.
Police have not disclosed whether any shots were fired or if anyone has been injured. The nature of the incident remains unclear, but authorities say they are treating the situation with “the utmost seriousness.”
Parents and community members have gathered anxiously near the school perimeter, awaiting word about the safety of students. Staff and pupils are believed to be sheltering inside the school while officers conduct their investigation.
Greater Manchester Police urged residents to avoid the area until further notice. “We understand the concern this will cause, but public safety is our priority,” a GMP spokesperson said.
This remains a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
