NAIROBI, Kenya — Harrison Mumia, the president of the Atheists in Kenya Society, has been released on bail after pleading not guilty to charges brought under Kenya’s Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act.
Mumia is accused of publishing AI-generated images on Facebook and Instagram that falsely depicted President William Ruto as either dead or critically ill. According to the charge sheet cited in media reports, the posts were allegedly uploaded in late December using a Facebook account operated by Mumia.
Authorities say the content amounted to the publication of false information, prompting his arrest without a warrant on January 2. The case has drawn national attention, raising questions around digital misinformation, artificial intelligence, and freedom of expression in Kenya.
Following his court appearance, Mumia was granted bail as investigations continue. He is expected to return to court for his next mention on January 19, when further directions on the case will be given.
The matter remains under judicial review as prosecutors prepare to present evidence related to the alleged social media activity.
