Babatunde Akowe Obituary News
Judge Akowe was a lifelong Brooklynite, born and raised in Crown Heights. His commitment to his community was not a slogan—it was a calling. Rooted in the belief that the law should protect, uplift, and empower, he devoted his life to ensuring fairness and equity for the underserved and underrepresented.
His professional journey spanned several key institutions across New York City government, including the District Attorney’s Office and the New York City Council. In every role, he approached legal, human rights, and regulatory challenges with integrity, strategy, and compassion. His service in Kings County’s Second Municipal Court District was marked by fairness, humility, and a steadfast commitment to justice.
Judge Akowe was a proud alumnus of Lincoln University (PA), Temple University (magna cum laude), John Jay College, and Thurgood Marshall School of Law. His dedication to education extended beyond his own achievements—he returned to Lincoln University as an adjunct professor, mentoring and inspiring the next generation of advocates, public servants, and leaders.
A devoted member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., CORO Leadership New York, and 100 Black Men of New York, Judge Akowe believed deeply in mentorship, civic engagement, and collective responsibility. He lived these values not only in courtrooms and classrooms but also in neighborhoods and community spaces across Brooklyn.
Above all, Judge Akowe was a family man. He is remembered as a loving husband to his wife, Lauren, and a proud father to their two daughters, Adia and Amara, who were his greatest joy and source of inspiration. He was a cherished son, a beloved brother, and a steady presence to those who knew him personally.
His family shared the following message:
“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the transition of our beloved Babatunde. A devoted husband, loving father, cherished son, and dedicated public servant, his legacy of kindness, integrity, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. We ask that you keep his wife Lauren, their daughters, and our family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
The Lincoln University Alumni Association also expressed its sorrow, noting that Judge Akowe “embodied excellence, leadership, and a lifelong commitment to justice and community uplift.”
Judge Akowe’s legacy is one of purpose, perseverance, and principled service. He leaves behind a community made stronger because he served it, a profession enriched by his leadership, and a generation of young people who will carry his lessons forward.
Details regarding memorial arrangements will be shared in the days ahead.
Rest in Power, Judge Akowe. Your light endures.
