The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has identified the victim in Wednesday evening’s fatal shooting in Burnaby as 19-year-old Connor Sheriff.
Sheriff, who police say was known to law enforcement and believed to have ties to the local drug trade, was fatally shot in what investigators calling a targeted attack.
“This was a targeted and brazen shooting in a high-traffic area,” said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT on Thursday. “Those involved displayed a complete disregard for public safety.”
Incident Overview
On November 5, just after 6:30 p.m., Burnaby RCMP responded to multiple reports of gunfire near McKay Avenue and Kingsborough Street, an area bordering Metrotown. Officers arrived to find Sheriff suffering from life-threatening injuries. Despite emergency medical efforts at the scene, he could not be saved.
Shortly after the shooting, police were called to a vehicle fire near Kingsway and Inman Avenue, roughly a five-minute drive from where the shooting occurred.
Investigators have since confirmed the burned vehicle is believed to be the suspect vehicle used in the attack. The use of a vehicle disposal by fire is consistent with tactics seen in gang-related violence in the Lower Mainland.
Ongoing Investigation
IHIT has taken conduct of the case and is working alongside Burnaby RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS), and the BC Coroners Service.
The investigation remains in its early stages, and detectives are currently:
Reviewing surveillance footage from nearby residences and businesses
Conducting witness interviews
Canvassing the area for additional information
“We are working diligently to identify all individuals involved,” IHIT said in a statement.
Call for Witnesses and Dashcam Footage
Investigators are asking anyone who was in either of the following areas on November 5 between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to come forward: McKay Avenue and Kingsborough Street
