The Charlotte community is reeling following a tragic shooting that took place early Monday morning at the Hazel SouthPark Apartments on Barclay Downs Drive.
Police have now identified the victim as 45-year-old Dwanneich Hammonds, who was found suffering from gunshot wounds inside the apartment complex’s parking garage.
According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD), officers were dispatched to the scene shortly before 7 a.m. after receiving reports of an assault with a deadly weapon.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Hammonds critically injured. Emergency medical responders from MEDIC transported her to a nearby hospital, but despite the best efforts of doctors and paramedics, she succumbed to her injuries a short time later.
The incident has left residents of the upscale SouthPark neighborhood shocked and heartbroken. The Hazel SouthPark Apartments, located in one of Charlotte’s busiest retail and residential areas, is typically known for its quiet and secure atmosphere.
The news of a deadly shooting in its parking garage has deeply unsettled residents and raised concerns about safety in the area. Neighbors told Channel 9 News that they were startled by the sound of gunfire early Monday morning.
Many described hearing loud noises echoing through the garage, followed by the arrival of police cars and ambulances. Residents were temporarily asked to remain indoors as officers secured the scene and began gathering evidence.
Homicide detectives with CMPD’s Violent Crimes Division responded to the location to launch a full investigation. Officers spent several hours canvassing the area, reviewing security footage, and speaking with potential witnesses. As of Tuesday morning, police have not yet released any suspect information or confirmed a motive behind the deadly shooting.
Investigators are urging anyone who may have seen suspicious activity near the Hazel SouthPark Apartments between 6:00 and 7:00 a.m. Monday to come forward. Detectives believe that tips from the public could play a crucial role in identifying the individual or individuals responsible for Hammonds’ death.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department also reminded the community that anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. A cash reward may be available for information leading to an arrest in the case.
