A 16-year-old Edmonton boy, identified by family as Jayden Naistus, was found dead in the Callingwood area after being reported missing early Thursday morning. Loved ones say Jayden had been struggling with depression in the months leading up to his death.
Jayden’s older sister, Joan Yellowbird, issued a public plea Thursday asking for help locating her brother, who had last been seen leaving her residence around 4 a.m. She shared his description on social media in hopes of finding him safe.
“Has anyone seen my little brother?” she wrote. “He was last seen at 4 a.m. this morning… He left from my place in Callingwood, Edmonton.”
Later that day, Yellowbird confirmed the heartbreaking news that Jayden had been found deceased by suicide not far from her home.
“Unfortunately, my baby brother has been found deceased early this morning,” she shared. “Not far from my place.”
Edmonton Police Service has not released further details, though they confirmed that no criminal activity is suspected.
A Community in Grief
The death of the 16-year-old has shaken family members, friends, and the wider community. Jayden, described by relatives as kind, quiet, and deeply loved, had been facing significant emotional struggles.
The family has asked for privacy as they process their loss.
Mental Health Support Encouraged
Local advocates are urging families to check in on young people who may be facing mental-health challenges. Alberta continues to see rising concern around youth mental wellness, with experts emphasizing the need for accessible support and open conversations.
