FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Ohio — A woman is dead and several people, including firefighters, were hospitalized after agencies responded to a call related to carbon monoxide exposure in Fairfield County on Thursday. Firefighters with the Bloom Township Fire Department were called to a home in the 9200 block of Slough Road NW around 9:30 a.m., according to Fairfield County Sheriff Alex Lape.
Fairfield County Sheriff Alex Lape said responders found multiple people and a family pet inside the home “exhibiting symptoms consistent with carbon monoxide poisoning.”
A 96-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other family members were taken to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center for treatment. Their conditions were not provided.
Lape said seven firefighters were also taken to the hospital as a precaution for potential exposure. They were released from the hospital as of 2:40 p.m.
Fire Chief Thomas Williams told 10TV that the first medic who arrived on the scene did not have a carbon monoxide monitor on because it was broken. That monitor would have let him know to leave the house. Instead, the chief said he became nauseous, had a headache and began vomiting.
The chief said he had no idea the medic’s CO monitor was broken until the medic told him today. A new CO monitor was ordered.
10TV obtained the 911 call and there was no mention of a CO threat.
The incident remains under investigation. Lape said the Fairfield County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death.
Additional information will be released as it becomes available, according to Lape
