It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the tragic passing of 18-year-old Taariq Connor, a beloved former Watson Chapel High School student and a promising Philander Smith University Panthers baseball player, who lost his life in a devastating car crash near Mile Marker 24 by Jefferson on Thursday night, October 9, 2025.
Taariq’s untimely death has left his family, teammates, coaches, and the entire Philander Smith and Watson Chapel communities in deep sorrow. Known for his infectious smile, unwavering dedication, and genuine kindness, Taariq embodied the true spirit of a scholar-athlete. He was driven not only by his love for baseball but by his determination to succeed both on and off the field.
Philander Smith head baseball coach Kelvin Battles described Taariq as a “dedicated and positive spirit” who made a lasting impact in a short time. His teammates remember him as a loyal friend and motivator who lifted others with his encouragement and humility.
As we grieve this heartbreaking loss, we also lift in prayer those who remain hospitalized — including Caleb Isabel, Caleb Winfield, and JaTwan Wells — and ask for healing and strength for their families.
Taariq’s light will continue to shine through the lives he touched.
May his memory live on forever, and may he rest peacefully in eternal grace.
