A law enforcement operation in Margate resulted in gunfire Wednesday on the 6100 block of NW 2nd Street, leaving a Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) deputy injured and a suspect dead, authorities confirmed.
According to BSO, deputies and members of Margate’s Burglary Apprehension Team were conducting an operation in the area when an encounter with a suspect escalated, leading to shots fired. During the exchange, one deputy was struck, but officials say the round hit the deputy’s ballistic vest, resulting in only minor injuries.
Emergency responders evaluated the deputy at the scene. BSO reported that the deputy is expected to be OK.
The suspect was struck when deputies returned fire. Officials confirmed that the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene. The suspect’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
The incident occurred near Southgate Boulevard and U.S. 441, an area that was temporarily closed as investigators processed the scene. Heavy law enforcement presence remained for several hours as detectives worked to determine the sequence of events that led to the shooting.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is expected to take over the investigation, which is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings in the state.
No additional injuries were reported. More information will be released as the investigation continues.
