Authorities in Oklahoma City have identified the man killed in a shooting early Monday at an apartment complex in the southwest part of the city. The announcement came as police continued their investigation into the tragic incident, which unfolded inside one of the units during the early morning hours.
According to officials, officers were dispatched shortly after 1 a.m. to the complex near Southwest 89th Street and South Western Avenue following a report of a shooting. When they arrived, they found the door to one of the apartments standing open. Inside, officers discovered a man who had already died from his injuries. He was later identified as 33-year-old Chimei Zounon, and authorities notified his family before releasing his name to the public.
The discovery launched an immediate and intensive investigation. Homicide detectives and crime-scene specialists worked through the night, gathering evidence, documenting the scene, and interviewing anyone who might offer insight into what happened. Police said they are examining all possibilities, including whether the shooting involved someone known to Zounon or whether unusual activity had been observed in the area beforehand.
At this time, authorities have not named a suspect or released details about who may be responsible. Investigators stressed that withholding certain information is standard practice early in a case, as releasing unverified details could jeopardize the investigation. They assured the public that leads are being followed and updates will be provided once solid information is confirmed.
Residents of the apartment complex and nearby homes were unsettled by the heavy police presence and extended crime-scene activity. Officers reassured neighbors that the area was secure and that the continued investigation was aimed at ensuring every detail was properly reviewed. Apartment communities often rely on a sense of familiarity and safety, making incidents like this especially distressing for those who live there.
Lieutenant Jeff Cooper of the Oklahoma City Police Department said the investigative team would remain on the scene for several more hours, emphasizing that cases involving loss of life require meticulous attention. Each piece of evidence, no matter how small, can be crucial in determining what took place inside the apartment before the shooting.
