A 16-year-old schoolgirl from Limlair Village, Corentyne, Berbice tragically lost her life Friday night after a bus transporting students home from the Inter-School Athletic Championship in Region Six toppled along Number 63 Road on the Corentyne.
Regional Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus confirmed the teenager was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty. Several other passengers, including a teacher, remain in critical condition and are receiving emergency treatment.
Reports indicate the accident happened around 18:00 hrs as a teacher was driving a minibus carrying students home from the athletic event in Corriverton. The driver reportedly swerved to avoid hitting a horse on the roadway, but despite attempts to evade the animal, the vehicle collided with it, causing the minibus to overturn.
Students injured in the crash were rescued and transported to Number 75 Hospital for medical care, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.
