The Standish community is heartbroken following the tragic loss of 5-year-old Simon Gonzalez, a kindergarten student at Edna Libby Elementary School, who was fatally struck by a school bus Tuesday morning.
The crash occurred shortly before 8 a.m. near 437 Northeast Road, part of Route 35, less than half a mile from the school. Simon was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said one other student on the bus was Simon’s half-brother.
Simon’s family described him as a joyful and energetic child who loved life, school, and spending time with his loved ones. His grandfather, Jason Small, said, “Simon loved life. He loved to just be on the go. Our family has been devastated by this loss. He was and always will be extremely loved and missed by his whole family and everyone that knew him.”
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Maine State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, are investigating the circumstances of the crash. Authorities have stressed that their focus is on supporting Simon’s family and the school community during this incredibly difficult time.
In response to the tragedy, Edna Libby Elementary School dismissed students early, and counselors were made available for students and staff. Superintendent Clay Gleason urged the community to respect the family’s privacy and to avoid speculation, emphasizing that support for those affected is paramount.
