According to the Oakland Police Department, officers were called to the campus on Skyline Boulevard shortly after reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found one juvenile suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive, police confirmed.
During a press briefing, Oakland Police Assistant Chief James Beere said two suspects had been taken into custody, though their identities and possible connection to the school have not yet been confirmed.
“We are still determining whether the victim and suspects are students,” Beere said, adding that two firearms were recovered at the scene.
The incident triggered an immediate lockdown at Skyline High School as officers secured the area. The lockdown was lifted once police determined there was no ongoing threat to students or staff.
Oakland Unified School District spokesperson John Sasaki said district officials were notified almost immediately after the shooting occurred and that law enforcement arrived within minutes.
“Unfortunately, there was one injury, but we’re so grateful there’s just one injury, and we’re so grateful that injury wasn’t more serious,” Sasaki said.
Parents were alerted to the situation through automated calls and messages from the district. Additional counselors and crisis support staff have been made available to help students and employees process the incident.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including what led up to the violence and how the weapons were brought onto campus.
The Oakland Police Department is urging anyone with information or video footage related to the shooting to contact investigators.
As of Wednesday evening, Skyline High School remains under increased police presence as classes are expected to resume Thursday with enhanced security measures in place.
