ST. CROIX COUNTY — The St. Croix County community is mourning the tragic loss of 8-year-old Owen P. Hailey, who died Tuesday following a devastating vehicle crash in Richmond Township that also left his mother seriously injured. The fatal accident serves as a grim reminder of how quickly life can change and has left family, friends, and neighbors grappling with profound grief.
According to the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 9:51 a.m. on December 9, 2025, along the 1500 Block of County Road A. Deputies responding to the scene discovered a two-vehicle collision. A 2004 Chrysler Pacifica, traveling southbound, had lost control on an icy curve and collided with a northbound 2018 Subaru Outback.
The driver of the Pacifica, 27-year-old Alisha M. Hailey of New Richmond, was accompanied by her young son Owen, who was seated in the third row of the van. Life-saving measures were immediately performed, and both were transported for emergency care. Alisha was treated for serious injuries at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, while Owen, critically injured, was first taken to Westfields Hospital in New Richmond before being transferred to Regions Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Owen succumbed to his injuries later that evening.
The driver of the Subaru Outback, 71-year-old Linda D. Stefonek of New Richmond, sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Authorities confirmed that all individuals involved were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision.
Emergency and law enforcement agencies responded swiftly to the crash, including the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office, New Richmond Police Department, New Richmond Fire Department, New Richmond Ambulance, Baldwin Ambulance, and the St. Croix County Highway Department. The staff at Westfields Hospital were also recognized for their dedicated care during this traumatic incident.
This crash marks the tenth traffic fatality recorded in St. Croix County in 2025, highlighting the dangers posed by winter driving conditions. Authorities have confirmed that the crash remains under active investigation as they work to determine contributing factors, including road conditions, speed, and vehicle control.
Owen P. Hailey was remembered by family and community members as a joyful, loving, and energetic child whose life was full of promise. In his brief time on earth, Owen brought happiness and warmth to everyone around him. His untimely passing leaves a void that will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him.
