One person was killed early Tuesday morning in a single-vehicle crash in Portage Township, according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.
In a press release, officials reported that the crash occurred around 4:24 a.m. on Township Road 21, just west of State Route 613. Investigators determined that the driver, 81-year-old Arthur Patterson Jr., had been traveling westbound when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. His vehicle went off the left side of the road and overturned.
Emergency crews responded quickly, but Patterson was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash.
Authorities have not released any additional details about what may have led to Patterson losing control of the vehicle, and the incident remains under active investigation. The sheriff’s office has not indicated whether weather, road conditions, or a medical episode may have played a role.
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by local emergency responders and roadway crews as officials worked to secure the area and clear the crash site.
More information will be provided as the investigation continues.
