DYER COUNTY, Tenn. (WMC) – The Dyer County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting in the Lenox area that left one man dead and another critically injured.
Deputies say they responded this morning and found a man with at least one gunshot wound who was pronounced dead at the scene. A second man was shot and taken to a hospital in critical condition.
The suspect left and, in an apparent suicide attempt, drove Eastbound on the Westbound lanes of I-155 near the Mid‑South Dragway (Highway 181) and collided head-on with an 18-wheeler. The suspect later died at the hospital. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.
The sheriff’s office announced 60-year-old Sherry Lydon as the suspect in the shooting and the crash. Deputies say she killed her husband, William John Lydon Jr. while he was sleeping and shooting her 24-year-old son before leaving the home. He’s currently in critical condition.
Investigators say Lydon had recently undergone surgery and was reportedly experiencing mental health problems which played a factor into this incident.
“This is an incredibly tragic situation that has affected our community deeply. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lydon family during this difficult time, and we ask for your continued patience as we navigate this investigation”, said Dyer County Sheriff Jeff Box.
