Dyer County, TN – The Dyer County community is grieving following a devastating incident early Tuesday morning in the Lennox area, where a suspected murder-suicide claimed the life of a 60-year-old man and left his 24-year-old son critically injured.
Deputies from the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home in Lennox and found William John Lydon Jr. with at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, his adult son, was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Authorities identified the suspect as 60-year-old Sherry Lydon, who investigators say fatally shot her husband while he slept and then shot her son before fleeing the residence. In what officials believe was an attempted suicide, Lydon drove eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-155 near the Mid-South Dragway and collided head-on with an 18-wheeler. She was taken to a hospital, where she later died. The truck driver was unharmed.
Investigators noted that Lydon had recently undergone surgery and was reportedly experiencing mental health challenges, which may have contributed to this tragic sequence of events.
Sheriff Jeff Box described the incident as “an incredibly tragic situation that has affected our community deeply,” adding that thoughts and prayers remain with the Lydon family during this difficult time.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and urge the public to allow law enforcement to complete their work while supporting those impacted by this heartbreaking event.
